Anglo-Japanese Alliance
The first Asian countries forming alliance with Britain.
1905
Russo-Japanese War
Defeat of Russia proves the powers of Japan in 1900s.
1912
Muji Emperor (明治天皇) passed away and Taisho Emperor (大正天皇) ascended the throne.
1915
Japan invaded Shandong and force China to sign ‘Twenty-one Demands’.
1918
First Prime minister, Hara Takashi (原敬) was appointed, all his cabinet members were members of his party except army minister, which marked the start of party politics.
1919
Outline plain for the Reconstruction of Japan
It proposed to overthrow party politics and adopt aggressive foreign policy under the leadership of Japanese Emperor.
1925
General election law
All men aged 25 have the right to vote
1927
Tanaka Memorial
(田中奏摺)
It outlined the plain to take over the world: First Manchuria, then China, Asia and the world.
1931
18/9 Incident
Japan invaded Northeast China and set up Manzhouguo (滿洲國)
1932
May 15th Incident
Prime minister Inukai Tsuyoshi (犬養毅) was killed
1936
February 26th Incident
Army started a mutiny and killed Takahashi Korekiyo (高橋是清)
1937
Japan invaded in the whole China for 8 years.
1940
Imperial Rule Assistance Association (大政翼贊會) was established to replace political parties.
Berlin-Rome-Tokyo Axis was formed

Japan invaded Southeast Asia and proposed ‘Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere’ (大東亞共榮圈)
1945-52
Occupation period, U.S. adopted many economic and political reforms.

San Francisco Peace Treaty
Japan became independent and could provide labor and material resources to the Southeast Asian countries as punishment
Japan-US Security Treaty
US forces stayed in Japan for protection which saved Japan’s military expenditures. (lower than 1% of GDP)
1952
First Sino-Japanese Non-official Trade Agreement was signed
1955
Joined General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) (關稅及貿易總協定)
1962
Sino-Japanese Long-term Trade Memorandum was signed.
1972
China and Japan resumed their diplomatic relations.
1977
Fukuda Doctrine
(福田主義)
Japan expressed their willingness to establish long-term relations with Southeast Asian countries.
1978
China-Japan Peace and Friendship Treaty. Japanese government recognized PRC is the only legal government in China.
1983
Japan visited South Korea.
1984
Japan visited China, India and Pakistan
1985
Japan proposed ‘Four principles for Asia-Pacific cooperation’ to enhance its influence in Asia

1911 Revolution
After 11 revolutions, Sun finally overturned the Qing Dynasty
1912-16
Yuen became the first president of new republic in 1912, but then he restored monarchy in 1915. Finally it was not successful due to the Campaign to Defend the Republic (護國運動)
1916-28
The Warlord Era
After Yuen died in 1916, The Beiyang generals separated and expanded in different regions. It ended after Northern Expedition led by KMT.
1919
May-Forth Movement
China handed Shandong right to Japan under ’21 demand’. The Chinese were very angry and triggered this event.
Chinese Nationalist Party was set up
1921
Communist Party of China (CPC) was set up
1924-27
The First United Front
Two parties cooperated to plan the Northern Expedition.
1928
Northern Expedition was successful and Nanjing government was set up
1931
9/18 Incident
Japan invaded Northeast China and set up Manzhouguo (滿洲國)
1934
New Life Movement
It promoted a spiritual awakening among the Chinese and the virtues of Politeness, righteousness, integrity and self-respect (禮義廉恥)
1937-45
Japan fully invaded China, Second Sino-Japanese War formally began.

Chinese Civil War
Communist Party of China (CPC) finally won the war.
1949
People’s Republic of China was established.
1950-52
Land Reforms
Landlords’ land was taken and redistributed to each poor peasant.
1951
Three Anti
Anti-corruption, wastage and bureaucracy
1952
Five Anti
Anti-bribery, tax evasion, theft of national treasures, constriction fraud and national economic intelligence
1953
First Five Year Plan
1) Develop heavy industry: 156 construction projects started
2) Agricultural collectivization: Cooperatives was established. Peasants shared land and farmed collectively. Over 90% peasants joined in 1956.
3) Handicraft collectivization: Production, Supply and Producers cooperatives was set up. Over 90% handicraft workers joined in 1956.
4) Private industry was nationalized for planned economy.
1958
Second Five Year Plan
1) General Line for Socialist Construction, 2) Great Leap Forward,
3) People’s Communes. Totally failed.
1966-76
Cultural Revolution
Brought negative impacts to China in different aspects
1979
Reform and Opening-Up
1979
China and U.S. established formal diplomatic relations. Deng visited U.S.
1983
Hu Yaobang (胡耀邦) visited Japan
1986
Elizabeth represented U.K. visiting China

Sanitary Board (潔淨局) was renamed to Urban Council. Some of the local citizens could be the jurors to vote

Young Plan
Increase the number of unofficial members in Legislative Council

Localization of Civil service
Increase the local representatives in civil services.
Outcome: 16.3% members are Chinese in 1964.

It sets up the direction of ‘Hong Kong people ruling Hong Kong’ and ‘One country, two system’.
1985
First indirect election was held in Legislative Council. 12 seats were elected by members of District Board and Urban Councils. 12 sears were elected by functional constituencies.
1986
Regional Council
Part of seats were elected by geographical constituencies.
1991
First direct election was held in Legislative Council. 18 seats were elected by geographical constituencies while 18 seats were elected by functional constituencies.
1995
Wholly election was held in Legislative Council. 20 sears were elected by geographical constituencies while 30 seats were elected by functional constituencies.
