1946	Iron Curtain Speech	Churchill speech implied Cold War broke out.
1946	Chinese Civil War (1946 - 49)	Chinese Nationalist Party, (U.S. support) had a civil war with Communist Party of China (USSR support) in China.
1947	Truman Doctrine	U.S. president Truman requested to offer US$ 400 million to support Turkey and Greece to fight against Communism.
1947	Marshall Plan	U.S. provided economic assistance US$ 13 billion to Western Europe.
1947	Molotov Plan	USSR provided economic assistance to Eastern Europe.
1948	Berlin Blockade (1948-1949)	Stalin did not allow the new currency to be used in Berlin and cut all the land routes linking Berlin and Western zones of Germany, Berlin Blockade broke out.
1948	OEEC	OEEC was set up to allocate the Marshall Plan and improved the trade between the members to enhance U.S. influence.
1949	NATO	A military alliance was set up to combat against Communists.
1949	COMECON	Allocate Molotov Plan and implement economic cooperation in Eastern Europe.
1950	Korean War (1950-1953)	Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (USSR support) had a war with Republic of Korea (U.S. support). Korea was divided into South and North Korea.
1953	Stalin was dead, Nikita Khrushche, who advocated peaceful co-existence became USSR new president
1954	Berlin Conference	USSR, U.S., Britain and France discussed the problem of Germany and Korea.
1955	Geneva Summit	USSR had a conference with the West to discuss the disarmament issue.
1955	Warsaw Pact	Communist formed a military alliance to combat against NATO.
1957	Space Race	After Artificial Satellite Sputnik 1 was launched by USSR, the space race began.
1960	U-2 Incident	U.S. spy plane U-2 was shot down by USSR. Nikita Khrushche requested U.S. to apologize but Eisenhower rejected.
1961	Vietnam War (1961-1975)	Viet Cong (越共) started a rebellion in South Vietnam in 1959. U.S. supported South Vietnam but lost in 1975. Vietnam was reunited under communist rule.
1961	Berlin Crisis	East Germany built a Berlin Wall between the West and East Germany.
1962	Cuban Missile Crisis	U.S. requested USSR to withdraw the Soviet missiles in Cuban and ordered national mobilization. Finally USSR made concession.
1963	Nuclear Test Ban Treaty was signed to prevent spread of nuclear weapons.
	Set up a hot line between Washington and Moscow for both presidents to communicate immediately.
1968	Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty was signed to prevent spread of nuclear weapons.
1969	Strategic Arms Limitation Talks were held to discuss disarmament.
1972	34 countries joined Conference on Security and Cooperation of Europe (CESC)
1975	Helsinki Agreement was signed to ensure the boarders after WWII.
1979	U.S. and China established full diplomatic relations.
	Soviet-Afghan War	USSR sent troops to help Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (pro-Soviet government) to suppress the anti-communist.
1983	Strategic Defense Initiative / Star Wars	Missile Defense System was established by U.S. to defend the USSR missile attack which changed the Mutual Assured Destruction situation.
1985	Gorbachev became new General Secretary of USSR
1988	Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces was signed between U.S. and USSR to limit nuclear weapons.
1989	Most of the Eastern Europe countries set up non-communist government for freedom such as Poland, Hungary, East Germany, Czech, Bulgaria, Romania, and Albania.
1991	Gorbachev stepped down and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was created. Cold War was over because of dissolution of USSR.
