【HKDSE 2017 DBQ Q.3 English Version】
Q.3 (a) What, in your
opinion, was the main message of the cartoon in Source E? Explain your answer
with reference to Source E. (3 marks)
The main message of the cartoon in
Source E is to criticize France not to share the responsibility to maintain
world peace.
In the cartoon above (Then), Britain,
Italy and U.S. helped France by force to protect the peace.
However, in the
cartoon below (now), Britain, Italy and U.S. brought ‘suggestions’ and ‘ideas’,
which represent ‘peaceful means’ to persuade France to maintain peace but
France said it is ‘MY affair’ and tried to close the door. It reflects that the
cartoon wants to criticize France of not sharing the responsibility to maintain
world peace and said it is ‘MY affair’ and did not want the nations to involve.
Q.3 (b) Identify one
general misunderstanding of the impact of the First World War on women’s
status, according to the author of Source F. Explain your answer with reference
to Source F. (3 marks)
The general misunderstanding of the
impact of WWI on women’s status is that WWI leaded to increase of women’s
status in every social aspect.
From Source F, it stated that we
should not exaggerate the extent of social change in Europe after WWI. Although
women in some European states were granted voting right after WWI, the main
cause is the strong feminist movement before WWI. Oppositely, some women were not
granted voting right in some areas in Europe such as France, Italy and Romania.
Moreover, their social status in other aspects also did not enhance much, the
home and workplace was still completely male-dominated. Therefore, WWI
enhancing women’s social status is a misunderstanding.
Q.3 (c) Did the First
World War bring about a better Europe? Explain your answer with reference to
Sources E and F, and using your own knowledge of the development of Europe up
to 1929. (7 marks)
To large
extent I think that the WWI brought about a
better Europe up to 1929.
In the
aspect of women status, WWI enhanced the women’s social status. From Source F, most of the women in Europe
did not have voting right before WWI. However, the people realized the
importance and contribution of women during WWI. Therefore, voting right was
granted to women in some Europe states. From my own knowledge, women over 30
ages were granted voting right in 1918.
From my
own knowledge, WWI also leaded to democracy in some Europe states. For example Germany implemented democratic
system after WWI. A democratic government Weimar Republic was formed and the
president was elected. Before WWI, Germany did not have democracy and Wilhelm
II was the last Germany emperor before WWI.
From my
own knowledge, WWI improved the social development. The equipment and communication system used in WWI such as air transport,
radio, motor cars were adapted for common use after WWI, which improved the
social development.
However, in the aspect of maintaining
world peace, WWI did not bring a better Europe up to 1929.
From Source E, before WWI, the nations tried to protect the world peace
by force when there was war. It reflects that it did not have an effective
method to protect world peace.
Also,
Source F criticizes that France did not want to share the responsibility to
maintain world peace in 1923, which reflects that Europe did not bring a more
peaceful Europe up to 1929.
From my
own knowledge, the League of Nations set up after WWI could not maintain world
peace up to 1929. For example, when Italy occupied Corfu in 1923 and invaded in
Fiume in 1924, League of Nations did not have any action to stop the
annexation.
Therefore, only to large extent I agree that WWI
brought about a better Europe up to 1929.
